Bonfire ascetics are limited early on. The best non-boss farming loop is in Black Gulch. Join the Company of Champions. Break the early statues and farm the first 3 puddles and the two cave critters. That's a quick and easy 3700 (before any soul boosting gear) souls. Surprised no one here has mentioned Straid's cell yet.

Also if the one in Majula respawns if you use an Ascetic there, since its probably the safest way to not screw yourself over by making an area's bonfire intensity too high.
