Beitou became a notorious hot-springs resort during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945). Many Japanese-style onsen (hot water baths) remain. There are public and private baths; prices vary. In the Pacific War era, Japanese soldiers would come here to relax before going into battle, including kamikazi pilots.

Kawayu is a Japanese style Onsen in Xinhua Road Hot Spring area. It is a little bit far, but there is a public bus from MRT Shibei station. Unlike Beitou, it is not crowded and I didn’t see any tourist. That’s good. There are two bathing pools outdoors, but both are quite hot.
